Overview

Training courses are available covering multiple different taxa and delivered across a range of venues covering much of Southern England. Courses are run on behalf of conservation organisations including the British Trust for Ornithology and local branches of the The Wildlife Trust’s whilst others are run independently.

Prices

Costs for each course can be found on the relevant partner organisations website and will vary between approx. £45-60 per day

Birds

Located at some of the best sites in the UK, this is your chance to learn how to identify birds under expert supervision whilst exploring local nature reserves and wildlife hot spots. Focusing either on bird identification and/or BTO survey techniques, these course aim to transform you into a more confident birdwatcher. Perfect for anyone who is new to birdwatching, wants to develop their ID skills or learn to take part in the BTO’s popular and vital volunteer surveys.

Mammals

Discover the world of Britain’s mammals on these one day introductory courses. Learn about the animals which make up this enigmatic group, how to find them and hopefully meet a few on the day! Perfect for the amateur and budding ecologist. Several outdoor practical’s included.

Learning outcomes:
– Gain an overview of British mammals and there basic ecology
– Be able to identify British mammals by sight or by using field signs
– Learn several techniques in order to find, survey and identify them
– Learn how to properly handle a small mammals under expert supervision

Wildlife Gardening

Learn how to help your local wildlife with this practical one day course on wildlife gardening. Aimed at anyone who wants to help nature thrive, this course is the perfect way to learn more while gaining practical knowledge on what you can do to improve your garden for wildlife. With lots of tips and tricks to get you started, you’ll be brimming with ideas perfectly suited to your own garden.

Learning outcomes:
– Discover more about the life and ecology of common garden wildlife
– Learn how to provide habitat in your garden including planting plans, nesting boxes, supplementary foods and winter shelters
– Leave with tailored advice for your garden including an outline design and suggested planting options

Field Ecology

Want to know to improve your general wildlife knowledge and gain practical skills in identifying wildlife? Aimed at aspiring naturalists and anyone wanting to know more about nature, this course gives you the skills needed to accelerate your learning and methods which will serve you long after this one day course. With lots of practical tips and tricks on how to learn wildlife, our hope is you’ll feel ready to tackle any group be it birds, butterflies or botany!

Learning outcomes:
– Discover the basic principles of identifying any group of wildlife and the outline tools needed each different taxonomic group i.e. birds, bats, reptiles, small mammals etc.
– Practice using basic keys and identification books for identifying a range of different species
– Learn how using specific survey techniques can further your learning and get you closer to wildlife
